2019-2020 School Calendar - First Revision

Dear Parents, Guardians, Faculty and Staff,

Attached to this email is an updated 2019-2020 school calendar.  We have updated the calendar to reflect three changes since it was first issued last spring.  This email is to inform you of these changes and to explain the reason for each.

As you know, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that all public school students have a 180-day school year.  Since we had to cancel school due to snow last week, we have added one day to the end of the school year.

During our contract negotiations with teachers this year, we proposed and the teachers accepted, an additional day for teachers to receive professional development.  This allows us the opportunity for teachers to write curriculum, attend workshops and trainings, as well as work together to improve their instruction. So, while students will still have a 180-day school year, the teachers will have a 183-day school year.  We have decided to hold this additional teacher professional day on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. This is the day after the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. This will enable families to enjoy a four-day weekend, while teachers use the additional day to improve skills to become even better at what they do.

Also in our contract negotiations, it was agreed that eight times each school year the Jacobs Elementary School would dismiss students at 12:15PM to allow teachers to, with the approval of the principal, work collaboratively with peers to improve the curriculum offered at the Jacobs Elementary School, as well as the instruction and assessment provided to our students.  This year, there will be a total of five “Jacobs 12:15 PM Dismissals.” They are listed on this calendar as (JD) and take place during the last week of January, February, March, April, and May. Prior to each “Jacobs 12:15 PM Dismissal,” parents will be reminded using our School Messenger system. These “Jacobs 12:15 PM Dismissal” days are in addition to the previously scheduled district-wide early release days.

So, as long as we have no further school cancellations, the last day of school for the 2019-2020 school year will be June 17, 2020.

If you have any questions about the calendar changes, please feel free to contact me or Jacobs School Principal Christine Cappadona.

Have a wonderful evening.
