HULL --Superintendent Judith Kuehn and Principal Kyle Shaw are pleased to announce that Jacobs Elementary School students participated in the 14th annual Turkey Trot race and pep rally last week.

On Wednesday, Nov. 22, the Lillian M. Jacobs Elementary School hosted its annual Turkey Trot race. The day began with an announcement from Gym Teacher Jon Hawes, who expressed excitement about the day ahead and highlighted the dedication of the hardworking fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade participants.

"I am so proud of the students this year, they toughed it out to continue the tradition of the Jacobs School Turkey Trot this year,” said Hawes. “I couldn't have asked for more, in terms of the positive attitudes from all of the kids in such a tough running environment. On top of this, I was truly overwhelmed by the generosity and selflessness they showed by donating canned goods. This event truly shows how special our students and school really are."

The Jacobs Youth Cheerleaders added to the excitement with a spirited performance, setting the stage for the main event. The Turkey Trot officially commenced after the Jacobs students sang the “National Anthem.”

Students then set off on a 1.2-mile race, completing two laps through the streets surrounding the school while other students cheered them on.

The Turkey Trot originated in 2009 as a way to bring students together to engage in friendly competition.

As part of the event, students were asked to bring a donation of canned goods, which served as their entry fee to participate in the race.

Since its inception, students participating in the Turkey Trot have donated more than 15,000 canned goods to the local food pantry, Wellspring. This year alone, students collected 1,575 canned goods.

Each year, the school also picks a song that serves as the theme of the rally and as motivation for the student runners. This year, students chose "Lean on Me."

Once the race ended, a ceremony was held in the gym to celebrate all participants in their 1.2-mile race. Each student received a completion certificate and a finisher's medal.

"This year's Turkey Trot, a tradition since 2009, epitomized the strength and unity of our community and school,” Principal Shaw said. “Despite challenging weather, our students displayed grit and camaraderie, battling the elements with helping hands and words of encouragement. I’m so proud to be a part of this special community."
