HULL – Superintendent Judith Kuehn and Principal Anthony Hrivnak are pleased to share that Memorial Middle School students and staff recently participated in the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) statewide beach cleanup.

On Sept. 5, approximately 100 seventh and eighth grade students participated in COASTSWEEP, a statewide beach cleanup sponsored by the CZM.

Prior to the beach cleanup, students were grouped into teams based on their subject area homerooms. Teachers and staff led icebreaker activities, during which students were encouraged to practice this year’s community theme of working together on something to better the community in which they live.

Students and staff then walked as a group to Nantasket Beach to participate in the hour-long beach cleanup.

Throughout the hour, students collected 10 trash bags containing over 2,000 individual items of garbage. Students tracked the materials they picked up on data sheets to be submitted to COASTSWEEP.

COASTSWEEP is part of the International Coastal Cleanup organized by Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC. Volunteers from all over the world collect marine debris—trash, fishing lines, and any other human-made items—and categorize and tally what they find. This information is then used to help discover marine debris sources and find solutions to this problem.

“I would like to commend all of our students and staff who participated in this year's COASTSWEEP beach cleanup,” said Principal Hrivnak. “This event fits perfectly into this year's community theme. I was thrilled to see our students enjoy working together to better our environment.”
