Mrs. Smith- Kindergarten

Room C111

The  Jacobs School  Kindergarten is a full day  kindergarten. We strive to be both academic as well as developmentally appropriate. The kindergarten curriculum includes literacy (reading and writing), math, science, social studies, and the arts.

Our reading program is entitled “Literacy Place” (from Scholastic).  Both sight words as well as phonics are used  as reading is taught. There are 18 "big books" along with smaller versions of each book in the reading program. The children will receive a photocopied version of each book to take home and "practice" reading to friends and family. Along with the Scholastic books we use a Guided Reading program. Leveled books (levels A, B, C, D) which gradually increase in degree of difficulty are used. There are 5 or 6 books in each level.

Our math program entitled "Everyday Math" gives children the opportunity to apply their math skils in everyday experiences. The children have their own workbooks which include lessons in number identification, associating numbers and quantities, shapes, addition, and subtraction.

Our handwriting program is called Handwriting Without Tears. It includes a workbook to teach the children to print the capital and lower case letters as well as the numerals.

In writing, the children are introduced to Writer's Workshop .The children write and illustrate their own books. The kindergarten children are also involved in daily journal writing. Through the use of "inventive spelling" (writing the letters of the sounds heard in the words) the children begin to develop their skills of composition. Words, phrases, and eventually sentences are spelled phonetically. Writing is also incorporated into other aspects of the curriculum including math, science, and social studies.

Our science program is Stemscopes. The program includes life science, earth science and physical science. Hands-on experiences are the focus of the program as the children "learn by doing". Inquiry and discovery are the basic premises of the lessons.

In Social Studies curriculum addresses topics such as self-concept, holidays, the globe (land & water forms), and the community in which they live.
