Promoting Speech and Language Skills at Home:
- Model correct speech sound usage and language to your child
- Gain your child’s attention prior to speaking to them and ensure you are giving your child your attention when they are speaking to you
- Help your child learn new vocabulary words by talking about things and what they do (i.e. “this is your nose - we smell things like flowers and food with our nose”)
- Sing simple songs and nursery rhymes with your child
- Engage in fun activities such as baking or making a sandcastle and talk about the steps required
- Play games such as iSpy to work on building descriptive language
- Help your child learn to follow directions by giving them simple multi-step directions to complete around the house (i.e. “go to your room and bring me your folder”)
- Talk about where things are using words such as “under”, “behind”, “next to”, etc.
- Talk about opposites and similarities
- Give your child choices (i.e. "do you want to wear your red or blue shirt today?")
- Show your child pictures of familiar people/places and talk about what they see
I am so excited to work with your child to improve speech and language skills! Please feel free to contact me with any questions!
