Mrs. Buonagurio - Reading Specialist

Room C147 Reading
Welcome to my web page!  This is my 30th year as a teacher, and my 24th year teaching in Hull!  I am a Reading Specialist and my primary role is to administer assessments, analyze student data, and design interventions that will target areas of academic need.  I work with a variety of students during Pirate Time.  Students are grouped strategically to focus on a particular skill, thereby enabling each student to "get what they need to succeed," as part of our Schoolwide Academic Support. More about Schoolwide Academic Support can be found on the link to your left.

Our mission as reading specialists is for all students to reach grade level benchmarks.  We supplement classroom instruction and support struggling readers by teaching and modeling independent reading strategies.  We strive to develop a love of reading in our students so that they become life-long readers.

In addition to daily instruction, it is critical that your child practice reading text which has the phonics skills that we are practicing in class. At times we will be sending these books home.  It is important that students read these books to help facilitate their growth as readers.  Your child is expected to bring these books back the next day. Also, all grade one students participate in the home reading program called Wonderfully Exciting Books (WEB). Weekly, students will select home reading books from the WEB library cart. There is more detailed information on our WEB Reading Program link on the left side.

With students who have mastered the code and who are independently reading, our focus will be more fully on comprehension, oral and written.

Be sure to check out this Old Colony Library Network link. This site allows you to borrow books from 29 member libraries on the South Shore and pick them up at the town library in Hull.  All you need is a Hull library card.  You might want to ask your child what he/she would like to read about, if there is a favorite author or series of interest.  You can then search the Old Colony Library Network database for these books. They also have a whole collection of ebooks, so if your child has a Kindle, Nook, or iPad, you can borrow books for the device, as well. This is a quick and easy way to obtain books, allowing you to fit it in a busy family schedule.

I hope you and your child enjoy my read alouds. See the links above on the left.

As a reminder, we expect all students to follow our Jacobs School Core Values and be "RAD."

Thank you for participating in this home-school reading partnership.
